Since we've all been laughing out our asses at Apple for the past few days - anyone have any thoughts about Apple's conference where they announced that they would give out free bumpers and refund dissatisfied iPhone 4 customers? Note: you have until Sept 30 to return it.

Looking at the tech blogs for the event:'

Jobs said that the whole issue has been blown out of proportion and that it's only less than 15k people out of 3m users that have this problem.. sure sure. 15k people caused Apple to hold a first ever press conference for a problem and give out free stuff to everyone?
That's great that people are getting free bumpers, I've seen them, they look nice.
Wow, those bumpers are normally $30? have you guys actually seen them?
Welcome to the world's most expensive rubber band:
Yeah, I've seen them. They look exactly like cheap pieces of rubber. That you pay $30 for. Not including tax.
And it looks like they pissed RIM and Nokia off:
RIM: One thing is for certain, RIM's customers don't need to use a case for their BlackBerry smartphone to maintain proper connectivity. Apple clearly made certain design decisions and it should take responsibility for these decisions rather than trying to draw RIM and others into a situation that relates specifically to Apple.
Nokia: In general, antenna performance of a mobile device/phone may be affected with a tight grip, depending on how the device is held. That's why Nokia designs our phones to ensure acceptable performance in all real life cases, for example when the phone is held in either hand.
Well I think they had to say that all phones have problems, otherwise they would be forced to issue a recall. By saying it's common but just in case we'll give you a free item they can at least save face.
As long as people get free cases that's fine. I don't think they'll make the same mistake when their next model comes out.
